These days it is fairly common for people to use their garages for everyday storage and leave their valuable cars and other possessions out in inclement weather conditions. Instead of putting your valuables at risk and safely storing your junk, use your space better by following one of these 4 simple storage solutions for your home garage.

Organized Garage Door Interior

1. Overhead Storage

Unless your car reaches all the way to your garage ceiling, you have some wasted space that you could be taking advantage of. Overhead storage is a great way to get all of your belongings out of the way but still have a place to keep them. If your garage door runs on side tracks instead of overhead ones, you can use the space to hang bins, bicycles, or whatever bulky objects you may have. You should be wary of hanging anything that is too heavy if you are worried about retrieving it or the possibility of it falling onto your car.

2. Slat Walls

Slat walls, which you can later rearrange and use as you please, are a simple way to create more storage. You move bins to different positions to create more space rather than simply stacking boxes in a corner or moving everything to storage.

You can also apply a magnetic strip to one of the slats and use it to hang metal tools. This way the tools are accessible, organized, and out of the way.

3. Peg Boards

A classic solution to garage storage, peg boards are great for hanging tools that might otherwise lie around and pose a hazard. You may find it effective to split your peg board into different categories for organization. For example, one quadrant can be for children’s outdoor toys, such as jump ropes and hula hoops, while a section placed out of reach could be used to store tools away from curious youngsters.

4. Built-In Cabinets

Adding cabinets to a wall in your garage gives you an instant spot to store items you’d like to keep out of sight. Remember that just because it is out of sight does not mean it should be out of mind. Use your cabinet storage for tools and equipment that you access frequently, rather than a place to store junk that you do not use.
