The Getaway You’ve Always Dreamt Of

For many of us, finding a place to relax, eat a sandwich and watch the big game is just about as hard as finding the time. Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones that does have time, but your home wasn’t built with a space dedicated for man time. Whatever your situation may be, turning your garage into the ultimate man cave may not be as difficult as you think.

1. Visualize

Before ripping away at the drywall and foundation of your garage, sit down with a pen and paper and imagine what kind of space you’d like to spend time in. It might even be a good idea to step out into your garage and see where an old couch might sit well or where you could hang that dart board you’ve had since college. Maybe you’d like walls covered in memorabilia from your football team or a favorite vintage Porsche. Whatever your inclinations may be, make sure that your vision for this space will be personal and comfortable for you.

2. Plan

Once you have a grasp on what you would like, you’ll need to make some practical assessments of the space you will be converting into your ultimate man cave. For example, will there be enough power to run the stereo, the fridge and the big screen? Do you need better flooring options? Will you want to insulate and finish your walls and ceiling or will bare rafters and studs fit better with the groove you’re going for?

In any case, make sure to take measurements of windows, walls and any other space that you’ll need to plan for and around. When you know what you’re working with and what you’ll need, make a list and head off to your local hardware store.

3. Build

While building your ultimate man cave, do a good job. That may sound like an insult to your integrity, but it may be tempting to throw everything together haphazardly. Rome wasn’t built in a day and your man cave probably won’t be either. If you take time to do quality work, you, your buddies and your wife will all be impressed. You’ll also want to spend more time in your new space, which leads to the next point.

4. Enjoy

The goal in turning your garage into a man cave is to have a place to relax, eat that sandwich and watch your favorite games, in all of your manly splendour. When you finish, make sure to spend time in it. This might be the most important step. If you’re going to take the time to make your man cave, be sure to use it. It will be happier and so will you. Guaranteed.
