Dingy Garage Door? No Problem!

After you drive home from work and pull into your driveway, you realize that the outside of your house isn’t looking as good as it was a couple of months ago. What is giving your beautiful home this lackluster appearance?

Old Rusted Garage Door

Maybe a few storms have rolled through your area and kicked up a lot of dust and water. Maybe birds have been flying by with increasing frequency. Either way, your garage door is looking dingy and this is probably the main reason your house appears so dismal and uninviting.

Lucky for you, cleaning your garage door enhances the curb appeal of your home without complicated tools. Here we are going to walk you through the steps of cleaning your garage door.

What Will You Need?

The following supplies will come in handy:

  • Hose
  • Large bucket
  • Sponge
  • Broom
  • 1 cup of mild detergent
  • Brush with stiff bristles

Once you gather the needed supplies, set aside a couple of hours to clean your garage door.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Garage Door

Step #1

Close the garage door. This will keep dirt and water from getting inside your garage.

Step #2

Before getting the door wet or using any cleaning agents, use the brush with stiff bristles to scrub the surface of the door. This will remove hardened dirt, mildew, bird droppings, and other caked-on grime. If your door is laminated over steel or contains vinyl, scrub gently. Otherwise, you might damage the paint, vinyl, or lamination.

Step #3

Use a broom to sweep the dust and other particles off the door.

Step #4

Fill your bucket with warm water and one cup of mild detergent. Avoid using abrasive cleaners and acid-based cleaners like vinegar, which may damage the paint job. All-purpose cleaners may be necessary to remove oil spots and other tougher stains.

Dip a sponge in the solution and start scrubbing the door in sections. After each section is clean, hose it down.

Step #5

Allow time for the door to dry completely before opening it.

By following these five steps, your garage door and your home will look radiant again.
